UFC 189 fight card ‘shuffled’ after injury

Ulltimate Fighitng Championship (UFC) had to put out a small injury-related brushfire today as the Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor inferno continues to rage behind the scenes (more on that here).

John Hathaway, who was scheduled to fight Gunnar Nelson on the pay-per-view (PPV) main card of UFC 189, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 11, 2015, was forced out of the show because of an undisclosed injury.

Brandon Thatch — who was was originally scheduled to face John Howard in a UFC 189 “Prelims” bout — has agreed to replace Hathaway and fight Nelson instead on about two weeks notice. Howard, meanwhile, will now collide with Cathal Pendred, who makes a quick turnaround after defeating Augusto “Dodger” Montano via lackluster decision at UFC 188 less than two weeks ago to keep his record inside the Octagon perfect (4-0).

Both bouts will be contested in the Welterweight division.

In addition to the Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor main event, which is currently shrouded in uncertainty, 170-pound champion Robbie Lawler will defend his world title against Rory MacDonald in the co-main event.
